Past projects

EWERC has undertaken advisory or consultancy work for a number of agencies, including: the European Commission, the International Labour Organisation (Geneva), OECD (Paris), UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe), the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions (Dublin). Since 2001, research awards have been secured from: British Academy, British Council, ESRC, EPSRC, Leverhulme, Nuffield, DfID, Anglo-German Foundation, European Commission, European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions, European Social Fund.

Careers and Flexibility in the New Economy - A Transatlantic Study Online Survey

The aim of this survey is to gain a comparative insight into the career dynamics and flexibility available to IT workers and consultants in the UK and the USA.

Expert Group on Gender, Social Inclusion and Employment (EGGSIE)

Co-ordination of EGGSIE - 'EC's Expert Group on Gender, Social Inclusion and Employment' (2004-07) for the European Commission. This network comprises academics from 30 European countries and undertakes an annual programme of policy-oriented research and reports to the Equal Opportunities Unit of the Employment and Social Affairs directorate. This is the third EC network on gender equality issues that has been co-ordinated by EWERC (1991-96, 1999-2003).


Expert Group on Gender and Employment (EGGE)

Co-ordination of the European Commission's expert group on gender and employment (EGGE) in the framework of the 4th action programme on equal opportunities for women and men in the European Union.


Globalisation of the temporary staffing industry (ESRC)  

This ESRC project examines the spatial and organisational dynamics driving the globalisation of service activities. Using the temporary staffing industry as an example, this programme of work will map the business levels of the largest agencies, before exploring the ways in which they operate geographically and functionally. The research will be based on an analysis of existing quantitative data and a programme of semi-structured interviews with commentators on, and senior executives in, the global temporary staffing industry. The final empirical stage of the research will involve interviews in three differing markets for temporary staffing: Australia, Japan and Sweden.


Employment in the Childcare Sector    

This ESF funded project examined work and employment in the childcare sector. Case studies were carried out across the North West of England to explore the tension created by providing care and acting as a major source of employment for women how may themselves have their own care responsibilities.

Public and Private Care Work  

 The project will focus upon two sets of care workers - childcare workers and home care workers - contrasting the pay and working conditions of those working in the private sector and those working for the public sector. The low pay and poor working conditions can be found in both the home care and childcare sector, particularly in the private sector. The project will explore how developments such as the expansion of the private sector provision are contributing to the gender pay gap by pushing the pay of many care workers further down, leaving the minority in the public sector with better pay and conditions.


Time Use and Work Life Balance in Germany and the UK    

This project, funded by the Anglo German Foundation, uses time-budget surveys to analyse time allocation patterns. The project addresses the influence of the flexibilisation of duration, location and distribution of working-time and the blurring of boundaries between gainful work and home life on work-life balance.

EC Framework 6 'DYNAMO' project

The DYNAMO project is a ten-country comparative study of the 'Dynamics of national employment models' (DYNAMO), led by Steffen Lehndorff and Gerhard Bosch at the Institut Arbeit und Technik in Germany. Starting in August 2004, it has three years of funding from the European Commission, 6 th Framework Programme, Priority 7 Research Area 3: 'the variety of paths towards a knowledge society'.
